Michael Charles, RN, Named South Baldwin Regional Medical Center Patient Choice Award Winner
Each year South Baldwin Regional Medical Center (SBRMC) asked former patients to nominate exceptional nurses who exceeded expectations and every year the community responds with an incredible number of nominations.
The Patient Choice Award recognizes the quality care, comfort and compassion offered by the nurses at SBRMC, and honors one nurse in particular. At a recent ceremony Michael Charles, RN, was presented with the award. He will appear on a poster with other Patient Choice Award Winners that will be hung for a year in the hospital. In addition to the award and poster recognition he received a check for $500.
SBRMC asks former patients to spotlight an exceptional nurse because patients are the ones directly impacted by outstanding care.
“It is very difficult for us to spotlight just one nurse when there are so many nurses in our hospital doing such an incredible job caring for our patients,” says Margaret Roley, Chief Nursing Officer for SBRMC. “That’s why we asked patients to help us make the choice. They see the little things that matter so much on a very personal level.”
Charles works in the Emergency Department and regularly receives compliments and letters of thanks for his compassion with the patients. He was recognized by patients for the quality of care they received and by patient’s family members for his thoughtfulness when caring for a member of their family. Both patients and patient’s families said not only was he thoughtful and caring but exceeded their expectations of what a nurse should be in every aspect of their care and interaction with family members.
