Summer Scrubs back for a Fourth Year at South Baldwin Regional Medical Center
Foley, AL (September 12, 2012) – South Baldwin Regional Medical Center recently participated in its fourth season as a host hospital for the Summer Scrubs program. The program is a career exploration opportunity for rising 10th, 11th, and 12th grader students in Mobile and Baldwin counties who are considering careers in healthcare.
In order to qualify for the program, students must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher, an excellent conduct record, and no unexcused absences. Applications were reviewed by Project Manager, Carol Lambert and her committee. Candidates had to attend an intensive orientation program which covered items such as infection control, dress code, courtesy, hospital behavior, and HIPAA rules.
During Summer Scrubs week, the students spent each day in a different department such as pharmacy, obstetrics, emergency room, lab, radiology, 4 patient wings, the heart center and physical therapy. “We hosted students from Bayside Academy, Spanish Fort, Fairhope, Daphne, and Faith Academy, Robertsdale, Gulf Shores and also Home School students. They were able to explore health careers that interested them the most, and also learn about issues that affect all health professions,” said Kim Neal, SBRMC Director of Marketing & Provider Relations. “They were able to interact with health professionals and observed them on the job. We had about 10 students per day at our hospital, this was a phenomenal experience for participants” said Neal.
The Summer Scrubs program is a project of the Bay Area Healthcare Coalition, a volunteer driven organization of South Alabama healthcare providers and educators, working together to address current and projected shortages of qualified healthcare professionals in our community. South Baldwin Regional Medical Center was one of the 21 host sites in this worthwhile event.
